Peter Burgson has dedicated his life to exploring alternative approaches to education. When he opens a new "unschool" in the inner city of Philadelphia, his philosophy and teaching methods are put to the ultimate test.
Unschooled follows Burgson and three young teenagers as they embark on a radical journey of directing their own education. Without the traditional structure of grades, tests, and homework, the students are challenged to take greater responsibility for their learning while navigating the questions and uncertainties that come with such an unconventional approach.
Through authentic conversations and observational filmmaking, the documentary explores the possibilities and challenges of alternative education while giving viewers a firsthand look at the people at the center of the experiment.
Produced by Loaded Pixel, Unschooled premiered at the DOC NYC Film Festival in 2019 and was accepted and screened at SXSW EDU in 2020.
